How to Read Food Labels Without Being Tricked

How to Read Food Labels Without Being Tricked

Reading labels is a tricky business.
Consumers are more health-conscious than ever, so food manufacturers use misleading tricks to convince people to buy their products.
They often do this even when the food is highly processed and unhealthy.
The regulations behind food labeling are complex, so it’s not surprising that the average consumer has a hard time understanding them.
This article briefly explains how to read food labels, and how to sort out the junk from the truly healthy foods.

Don’t Be Duped By the Claims on The Front

One of the best tips may be to completely ignore the labels on front of the packaging.
Front labels try to lure you into purchasing products by making health claims. Manufacturers want to make you believe that their product is healthier than other, similar options.
This has actually been studied. Research shows that adding health claims to front labels affects people’s choices. It makes them believe a product is healthier than the same product that doesn’t list health claims.
Manufacturers are often dishonest in the way they use these labels. They tend to use health claims that are misleading, and in some cases downright false.
Examples include many high-sugar breakfast cereals, like “whole grain” Cocoa Puffs. Despite the label, these products are not healthy.
This makes it hard for consumers to choose healthy options without a thorough inspection of the ingredients list.

Bottom Line: Front labels are often used to lure people into buying products. However, most of these labels are highly misleading or downright false.

Look At the Ingredients List

Product ingredients are listed by quantity, from highest to lowest amount.
That means that the first listed ingredient is what the manufacturer used the most of.
A good rule of thumb is to scan the first three ingredients, because they are the largest part of what you’re eating.
If the first ingredients include refined grains, some sort of sugar or hydrogenated oils, you can be pretty sure that the product is unhealthy.
Instead, try to choose items that have whole foods listed as the first three ingredients.
Another good rule of thumb is if the ingredients list is longer than 2–3 lines, you can assume that the product is highly processed.
Bottom Line: Ingredients are listed by quantity, from highest to lowest. Try looking for products that list whole foods as the first three ingredients, and be skeptical of foods with long lists of ingredients.

How to Have a Happy, Healthy Liver...

Is your Liver Working Properly?  Did you know that without water your liver can not flush toxins out of the body?

We are 70% water and most people do not consume the correct amount of water on a daily basis.  The recommended amount is half your body weight, in other words a 180 lbs person should drink 90 ounces of water every day.

Your liver “bags up” environmental toxins, like bagging up the trash, in a two-phase system of enzymes:

Phase One: consists of 50 enzymes that oxidize or reduce toxins.  That is, these enzymes either add electrons or remove electrons from toxins to give them an electrical charge.

Phase Two: consists of six different enzymes pathways that conjugate toxins to various organic compounds.  That simply means that these enzymes attach or join (conjugate) the electrically-charged toxin which another compound.  This makes the toxin water soluble so it can be flushed from the body via the kidneys or the colon.   This is why a good supply of water is helpful to the liver.

Foods to Enhance Liver Detoxification

In order to do this job properly these enzymes systems require a wide variety of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fatty acids.  So, if you’re feeding your warrior liver a diet of refined and processed foods, don’t be surprised if it wimps out on you when you need protection from chemical toxins.

It’s also important that your liver gets adequate amount of antioxidants.  This is important because the detoxification process produces free radicals that can damage the liver if there aren’t enough antioxidants to protect it while doing its job.

Sour foods are said to tonify the liver. Such as, unsweetened lemon water, black cherry juice, wolfberry and mangosteen.    Thai Go contains many sour fruits that can tonify your liver and provide the antioxidants it requires.

Dark, green leafy vegetables and onions, garlic and cruciferous vegetables are also great liver foods.

Constipation and your liver

Believed to affect 25 percent of the population at any given time, constipation is different for each individual.  It has to do with the hardness of the stool (bowel movement) rather than how often one is passed. In a healthy individual one or more movement per day is desirable. The quicker toxins are eliminated from our body the less time they have to either ferment or cause other problems.

Mostly constipation is due to poor dietary habits, or by not going to the toilet when nature calls! This results in the bowel reabsorbing water and therefore making the stool hard.

Over a period of time, a layer of toxic waste products may build up on the lining of the sluggish bowel. This build-up can cause inflammation in the bowel, and the toxins are absorbed from the bowel and travel back to the liver via the portal vein. The liver has to work much harder to break down these internally produced toxins and symptoms of liver dysfunction may result. Thus constipation can lead to headaches, abdominal bloating, fatigue, allergies and skin problems.  This is called autointoxication or “a state of being poisoned by toxic substances produced within the body”.  I like to call it “Living in your own toxic soup”!

Colon Hydrotherapy and the Liver

You can’t clean your liver unless first you clean your colon.  Pathways must be open to dump the toxic sludge removed from the liver.  If you are planning to do a liver flush it is absolutely essential to make sure that one does colon hydrotherapy before and after each liver flush. It is extremely important to remove any stones that remain in the colon because once these stones disintegrate or decompose; a lot of toxins are released from these stones and also by the decomposing bacteria.

Not only will colon hydrotherapy open the pathways to allow the waste to be removed but it hydrates the body as well as allowing the colon wall to heal from years of abuse.

Combining Colon Hydrotherapy, adequate intake of pure clean water and diet changes can and has make dramatic changes toward having a Happy Healthy Liver.

Colonics for Detoxification and Weight Loss

Sherrie Rogers, MD., of Syracuse, New York, one of the worlds leading authorities on environmental medicine states in her book "Detoxify or Die" that toxins are not normal to the body, they are not meant to be metabolized by the body and we do not have the metabolic machinery to completely detoxify them.

Consequently, the body will have an allergic reaction when it is attempting to reject or expel the toxin or it will store the substance because it does not know how to handle it. Dr. Rogers also states that biopsy studies that were performed by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) showed that 100% of the people in the study had dioxins, PCB's, dichlorobenzene and dylem.  The PCB's are one of the most dangerous carcinogens known to man.  Hazardous chemicals like these can be found in breast milk in women living in the Artic Circle.

ColonicsAs these toxins accumulate in our body they cause what the scientist calls "the body's toxic load" or "toxic burden". At first we "feel a little off", but soon we become used to it. Then we start popping pills to feel a little better and consider this part of the aging process. We then resign ourselves to the thought that this is the general progression of time.

The FDA tests these substances for their toxic effect individually. No one, not the FDA, consumers or the Government knows exactly what effect consuming hundreds of these toxins on a daily basis will have on the body and, of course, it is impossible to test each person's exposure to the thousands of new products released on the market each year.

Americans' unhealthy relationship with food has caused us to gain weight.  First of all we eat entirely too much. With 24-hour markets, drive-thru and fast food restaurants, we have access to food 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
